A LANDMARK scheme which allows pedestrians to safely cross the busy A41 in Bushey was officially opened this week.
The new underpass, which travels under the A41 between Bushey and Elstree aerodrome, was officially opened on Tuesday by Lady Vestey, vice-president of the British Horse Society, in front of Martin Heywood, Mayor of Hertsmere.
The pioneering project, which has been built where the road crosses the M1, required special permission from the Minister of Transport to allow pedestrians to use the motorway verge for the first time ever.
Mayor Heywood said: "This is a really important scheme as letting walkers, cyclists and horse riders use the motorway verge has never been legally allowed before. "
