The leader of the Liberal Democrats in Hertsmere is warning he is apprehensive about the level of cuts facing the borough in the new year.

Councillor Roger Kutchinsky (Bushey North) claims the authority was “singled out” during the government's settlement announcement last month because of the “robust” nature of its accounts.

Hertsmere is facing a £2million reduction in its budget over the next two years and councillor Kutchinsky says he is worried about the level of services that will have to be cut.

“I think a lot of our constituents are going to be complaining they are losing out on vital services,” he said. “We know there are going to be a certain number of job losses too – these are real jobs and real people, it's no joke.

“Hertsmere has suffered disproportionately compared with a lot of other local authorities. We have come off very roughly – we came off worse than any other authority in Hertfordshire and Hertfordshire did not do well on the national scale.”

The announcements revealed in 2011/2012, the council will receive £6.3m, a loss of £1.2m on the current level, followed by a £0.8m cut in the second year for 2012/2013, dropping central government grants down to £5.5m.

The leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, Councillor Morris Bright admitted the cuts were the “worst case scenario” for the authority but pledged not to cut front line services.

However, Councillor Kutchinsky said: “There are going to be very deep cuts, we just don't know where yet. I am very apprehensive about the size of the cuts. I am looking forward to the local elections in May when we will find out what the public thinks. There is no coalition in Hertsmere.”
