South Oxhey’s police station could be closed in a bid to save money.

Hertfordshire Constabulary, which plans to save more than £35million over the next four years, has already drawn up plans to close five police stations across the county – one of which has already closed.

But the Hertfordshire Police Authority (HPA), which funds and manages the force, is considering the relocation of three other stations, in Bishop’s Stortford, South Oxhey and Berkhamstead “if cost effective partnering arrangements can be established.”

Members of the Authority’s resources committee will meet on Friday to discuss a series of recommendations, including “a phased programme of closure of front offices,” the feasibility of which will be assessed by forthcoming pilot scheme in Rickmansworth, where the town’s dilapidated police station will be closed and services transferred to the nearby offices of Three Rivers District Council.

Any closure of South Oxhey station, in Oxhey Drive, is likely to follow a similar model.

A HPA report into the matter suggests that visitor numbers are declining at such sites, adding that advances in technology provided the public with alternative methods of contacting the police.

A final decision into the matter is not expected until next year.
