Three friends must overcome mountainous terrain and dizzying heights as they prepare to travel across Peru on a motorbike.

Adam Fenton, 31, from Gade Avenue, Watford, is giving up his City job to travel to Sao Paulo, in Brazil, in two weeks time.

He will then travel across the continent to La Paz, Bolivia, where he will meet Avi Bagchi, 31, and Moira Eyres, 30, just days before they begin the Mototaxi Junket.

The challenge will see about 20 teams climb aboard a modified 125cc motorbike, with a "sofa" on the back, as they travel more than 1,000 miles across Peru from Puno to Ayabaca, at heights of about 4,000 metres.

The race starts on May 7 and they hope to reach the finish line – by any route they choose – by May 21.

Avi, from Hatch End, said: “There's no route. There's no back-up. There's just a start point and a finish point. How we get from A to B is up to us.”

Adam and Avi were inspired to enter the challenge after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro last year.

And the trio hope to raise £10,000 for Practical Action, a charity that aims to improve the lives of people living in poverty across the world.

“The project we're working on is the Alpaca farms in Peru,” explained Adam, whose company Schroders will make every pound their raise. “They've had lots of harsh winters so one of the things the charity is working on is how to improve their supply of food and energy.”

Preparations for their trip are now well underway. Adam and Avi enrolled on a motorbike maintenance course and Moira is taking part in first aid training.

“The challenges for us on the trip are things like sorting out the bike when it breaks down, which will probably be a lot,” said Adam. “Then it will be can we fix it and if not, can we find a person who can? It's going to be a pretty remote place.

“We hope to hit a small village every night to bed down but we have to take a tent with us.

“My biggest fear is around the handling of the bike on mountain roads. The steering is going to be weak, especially when you get severe road cambers.”

Avi said: “I'm looking forward to the amazing vistas and beautiful scenery, and meeting local people and really experiencing South America properly and seeing stuff you wouldn't on a two-week package holiday.”
