The glitz of Hollywood will pale into insignificance this weekend, as an illuminated sign is unveiled bearing the legend “Leavesden”.

Over the past weeks, few will have missed the erection of the 51-feet tall, 353 feet wide white lettering marking the entrance to the newly-bought studios.

According to architect Joe Carr, just like the wall of China, it will be visible from space.

Describing his inspiration, the designer for Dutch firm Schmoke Enmirahs, explained: “Studio bosses came to me and asked what they could do to really put Leavesden on the map, without alienating the community.

“They wanted something tasteful, something understated, but also something that would show our cousins across the pond that when it comes to it, size really does matter.

“The Hollywood sign measures 45 feet by 350. What we’ve come up with is something longer and wider than LA could ever offer.”

Thanks to a taxpayer-funded “neighbourhood grant” allocated by Councillor Kent du Rite, the structure will glow day and night.

This has come under scrutiny from local groups however, concerned about the high levels of UV rays it will emit.

But Mr Carr has dismissed these “frivolous protestations” claiming residents should take advantage of what is essentially a “free sunbed session”.

He said: “I can’t understand how people can complain - they’ll have an all-year tan, a healthy glow.

“Leavesden could become the sunshine capital of Hertfordshire, only a fool would fail to get excited about this.”
