A coffee morning held in honour of RAF veterans has helped raise hundreds of pounds for charity.

Crowds gathered at the Henderson Hall in Abbots Langley on Saturday afternoon, for the event organised by Abbots Langley and Kings Langley RAF Association.

Visitors drank cups of tea, ate biscuits and perused stalls selling bric-a-brac, cakes, homemade jams and marmalades.

Ken Curlewis, honourable secretary, membership and region delegate for the association, said: “We hold coffee morning for our ex-RAF twice a year – in April and November.

“They are organised to raise money for Wings, which helps support former and current RAF servicemen and women.

“It’s the British Legion’s equivalent of Poppy Day and always proves very popular.

“We had more than 50 people turn out on Saturday, it was one of our busiest.

“It’s a chance to have a bit of a chinwag, you do see the same old faces, but more often than not there are some new ones too. The biscuits always prove a massive draw, everyone tends to congregate around the tables with them on.

“But our aim is to remember those that have passed on and try to raise cash for those that are in need.

“Associations across the county yearly raise about two million pounds, and as we cover the biggest area we usually collect about £800,000 of that.”

The coffee morning raised more than £400 for Wings.
