Plans to host a community market in central Watford are taking shape, one month before it will open for the first time.

The Queen’s Road Summer Market will take place on Saturday, May 28 and continue every other Saturday until September 3.

Thirty one of the 40 available stalls have now been filled for the opening event, while shops along The Broadway will all have promotions to entice shoppers to visit them from across Beechen Grove.

The market will be the highest profile initiative launched to breathe new life into the shopping parade.

The subway under the Watford ring road that connects Queen’s Road to the Harlequin Centre has recently been redecorated while news signs have also been installed.

Councillor Helen Lynch, who is also a member of the Queen’s Community Action Group, said: “It’s about making it more attractive to new businesses and if they know we’re running this market, they will know there’s a desire to make the area more vibrant.

“It’s just been neglected for so long.

“It should be a lovely day. We will have all these wonderful stalls run by local people selling all sorts of stuff.

“If it’s a great success, we will do it again next year. If it’s a really great success, we might do it at Christmas.”
