A cyclist will pedal 100km around the Isle of Wight to raise money for the charity that cares for his daughter.

Peter Jackson will take part in the Isle of Wight Randonnee this Sunday, May 1, in support of DRUM, which provides day services and support to more than 70 physically disabled adults, including his daughter Yvonne Jackson.

The Randonnee is the largest event of its kind on the south coast of England, attracting about 1,500 cyclists each year. Peter said: “I am looking forward to a challenging ride, aware that the coastal hills will be a challenge but hoping it does not become 'mission impossible' due to gale force sea breezes.

“DRUM do a marvelous and essential job supporting people with disabilities, operating with minimal funds in these very difficult financial times. Any money this ride raises to support DRUM's work will be used directly for the benefit of DRUM members.”

The majority of people DRUM supports were not born disabled but became disabled through accident or illness, including strokes, Multiple Sclerosis, brain and spinal injuries.

The charity, based at the Parkgate Community Centre in Southwold Road, also supports more than 100 carers.

Sarah Sullivan, DRUM manager, said: “We are extremely grateful that Peter has chosen DRUM as his nominated charity for the cycle ride.

“We are a very small charity and like many others, are finding it increasingly hard financially, due to the recent reductions in funding and availability of small grants. “We always try to keep our overheads to a minimum anyway, only employing part time staff and relying on them and others to work with us on a voluntary basis.”
