Taxpayers have funded new electrical equipment at a Bushey day centre totalling £3,400.

The centre, in Elstree Road, provides activities and entertainment for elderly and disabled residents.

Four Bushey Conservative councillors - Pervez Choudhury (£1,500), Denise Kieran (£550), Steve O'Brien (£850) and Jane West (£500) - donated the cash through their ward improvement initiative budgets.

Under the scheme, councillors are given £2,000 of taxpayers' money to spend on volunteer groups and organisations within the community.

The Bushey District Day Centre will use the cash to buy a DVD player, projector, a Freeview tuner and an amplified sound system with speakers, among other things.

Councillor Choudhury said: "The day centre provides an excellent service for residents and local people.

"We were all delighted to help the centre buy the electrical items as we understand it can be hard for voluntary organisations to buy or update equipment in the difficult financial climate we find ourselves in."
