Children at Field Junior School in Watford recently launched celebrations for the 120th Anniversary of the school with a whole school project and Decade Day Fair.

Work in school was based on the wide array of artefacts collected over the life of the school including log books, photographs, punishment books and memoires.

Lizzie Cooper, the school’s history coordinator, said: “Particular interest was shown by children in the exercise books and school certificates of George Hester who attended the school at the time of the 1st World War.

“We then found his son Monty now in his 80s still lived in the area and we were thrilled when he came to talk to the children and answer their many questions.”

The fair was a big success. Children organised and ran their own stalls, each year group reflecting a different era from Victorian sideshows, a VE Day refreshment and entertainment area to the very popular present day multicultural food stall, representing the school’s rich diversity.

Headteacher, Julie Henley, whose own parents attended the school, has been thrilled by the project. “It is great to see the children getting enthused by local and living history and to have had visits from many past staff and pupils has been enlightening.

“The school is now creating its own heritage for future generations including a commemorative wall hanging and a clay tile mural."

For those with an association with the Watford Field schools, the school has also started to collect written memories from past staff and pupils with the intention of creating a permanent memory wall in school. Memoires can be sent to the school or emailed to - 120years@fieldjm.herts.sch.uk.
