Rail commuters will face average fare rises of eight per cent next year, latest inflation figures suggest.
The Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure, used to calculate annual rises, has remained unchanged at five per cent.
In previous years the formula for deciding regulated (season ticket) fare increases was RPI plus one per cent. However, the government’s policy to reduce public spending on the rail network will see that formula change to inflation plus three per cent.
Rail operators may chose to increase some other fares by an additional five per cent, as long as they balance the increases with reductions elsewhere.
For an average £2,532 season ticket to London Euston customers will have to pay an extra £202.
