St Albans funny man Nick Helm could be laughing all the way to the bank after he was nominated for the world’s most prestigious comedy award.

Mr Helm, a former pupil at Sandringham School, has been nominated the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award – formerly the Perrier Award.

After wowing audiences and judges alike with his one-man show Dare to Dream at the Edinburgh Festival, the comic has already received a prestigious gong from TV channel Dave for telling the funniest joke of the festival.

The 30-year-old comic, who beat several household names to claim the award, won for the joke: "I needed a password eight characters long so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarves."

A judging panel of ten critics had spent two weeks scouring the city for the best gags. They were then put to 3,000 comedy fans, who were asked to vote for their favorites.

If Mr Helm wins the Foster’s Award on Saturday night, he will follow in the footsteps of several comedy A-listers, including Lee Evans, Frank Skinner, Al Murray and Steve Coogan.
