The history of Leavesden Country Park will be the focus of a special presentation in Abbots Langley tomorrow.

Inspired by the enthusiastic responses to his Leavesden Hospital walks and talks, Martin Brooks, former park ranger of Leavesden Country Park, is inviting visitors to an exhibition on the park’s history in the Henderson Hall.

Photographs and documents related to Leavesden Hospital, which was closed in the 1990s, will be on display.

These include an 1871 payment ledger and an 1898 hospital steward’s record book – revealing an interesting insight into the everyday life of patients and staff.

Monica Diplock, author of ‘The History of Leavesden Hospital’ and former head of occupational therapy at the hospital, will also be present for the exhibition.

Mr Brooks, who will give a talk at the event, said: “It should be a hugely interesting presentation, and I hope anyone who has had any connection with or knowledge of the hospital will join us – as well as those keen to find out more about this local landmark.”

Following the hospital’s closure, two of its original buildings were converted into apartments and Demand, a local organisation, renovated the hospital chapel, retaining many of its original features.

The remainder of the extensive grounds are now used as Leavesden Country Park.

• The event will be held Saturday, September 10, at The Henderson Hall, Abbots Langley High Street, from 10am to 4pm. Martin Brooks will give his talk at 1pm.
