The annual Moor Park 10k foot race celebrates its tenth anniversary this weekend.

Runners will line up on the 6.2 mile Stewarts Law Moor Park 10k and Junior Fun Runs on Sunday at Merchant Taylors’ School.

The event is organised to raise money for the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre (LJMC) at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.

This year Alex Francis, a young actor who plays Bobby Beale in Eastenders, will be taking part in the Fun Run.

The nine-year-old enjoys many sports, including running in his school cross-country team and playing rugby, football and cricket.

Alex has been in Eastenders for four years and decided to take part in the event after his sister ran in 2008.

Running in the 10km race is James Gamble, who is one of three runners to have taken part in every Moor Park 10k.

Mr Gamble said: “I’d taken up jogging as a hobby and was keen to take part in a road race.

“The Moor Park 10k sounded ideal. It was local and it didn’t appear as if novice runners like me would be out of place. The sense of achievement as I crossed the finish line was incredible.”

His course personal best at the Moor Park 10k is 44 minutes 57 seconds, and, for the last two years, has finished in the top 20 for his age group.

Mr Gamble added: ““I’m honoured to be one of the few people who has taken part every year, supporting a great cause at the same time as having a lot of fun.”

All ages and abilities are welcome to take part, and everyone who takes part gets a medal.

There are also prizes for the top three in each age group and for the winning teams.

Buzz Coster, LJMC marketing manager, said: “We have been thrilled at the way the event has grown, the LJMC had never organised an event on this scale before and it has been tremendously exciting to watch it develop with the number of runners increasing each year.”

More than £280,000 has now been raised to support people affected by cancer. LJMC services include a drop-in centre, counselling and complementary therapies.
