Special kerbs have been installed in a North Watford street after two car accidents caused wooden posts to be fired into a house.

On both occasions, cars have spun off the road while being driven around a bend in North Western Avenue, by Courtlands Drive, hitting the post and rail fencing there.

Wooden posts were projected into the home of Rosetta and Patrick Russell, causing them to replace the porch on one occasion and an upstairs bathroom window on another.

To avoid these incidents occurring in the future, a high level kerb has been installed outside their house.

Mrs Russell said “I welcome the new kerbing and praise the workmen who did the job in just two days.

“It not only improves the outlook of the area but I think makes it safer for residents. Now I want the county council to get on with the road changes so accidents don't happen at all.”

Asif Khan, Leggatts ward councillor, said he had been working very hard to get a speed restriction and kerb put in place.

He added: “I'm concerned at the slow manner in which the speed restriction measures are being brought in. It is still a very dangerous bend.

“Thankfully the kerbs have been sorted and the barriers taken away from that section, but there is still some work that needs to be done.”

Ian Brandon, county councillor for Callowland and Leggats, said: “I'm so very glad they've been put in but none the less we've got a lot of work left to do to reduce the accidents there. At least residents that live there can be safe.”

The work was done after Watford Joint Member Highways Panel County officers commissioned a safety report on possible improvements, which has now been finalised.

County councillor Stephen Giles-Medlhurst said: “It's quite clear from speed counts that traffic is approaching this bend far too fast and must be made to slow down before a fatal accident occurs.

“The high level kerbs by the houses on the bend should stop any cars mounting the verge and causing pedestrian injury and property damage.

“A new high visibility bend sign is due and residents are to be consulted on two possible traffic calming options for this dangerous bend.

“I hope this is just the start of measures here.”
