The medals of a Kings Langley soldier brutally butchered by men of his own regiment during the Indian Mutiny fetched £4,600 at auction on Friday.

Colonel John Platt's medals, which had remained in a local bank vault for 132 years before being discovered by descendants in 1989, were bought by a private collector at Dix Noonan Webb in London.

Co Platt's long-lost Army of India Medal 1799-1826 and China 1842 Medal were sold together with his commission warrants, sketchbook and letters sent to him from his family and friends back home.
