Teachers of a West Herts College student, found stabbed to death on Boxing Day, said the 19-year-old had “a bright future before her”.

Catherine Wynter, 19, was found by her mother after being stabbed to death at a house in Borehamwood on December 26.

Her lecturers at West Herts College in Hempstead Road described Miss Wynter as a very talented artist.

Andrea Turvey, illustration tutor, said: “Katie was a sweet girl, kind friendly and very genuine. She was extremely creative and had great potential.”

David Eaton, illustration tutor, said: “Katie was a wonderful young woman, with a bright future before her.

“She was talented and hardworking, hoping to become a professional illustrator. Very friendly and popular she will no doubt be sorely missed by both students and tutors.”

Miss Wynter was studying towards a foundation degree in illustration after completing and art and design National Diploma. She would have graduated this year.

Caroline Fleet, textiles tutor, said: “I knew Katie for just over three years and had taught her textiles. Once she started her degree she would still pop in to show me her latest illustration work, she was very talented.

“Katie was without question one of the nicest students I have had the pleasure to teach. She was generous and kind, respectful and always, always smiling.”

Georgina Jones, head of school for Art and Design, said: “It was always good to see her smiling face around the college. She had been with the college for a number of years had been popular throughout for her positive, happy and respectful approach to life.”

Gill Worgan, principal, said: “Having spoken to staff it is clear from their kind words that Katie was highly regarded and always wore a smile. She will be a great loss to all who knew her.”

Ms Wynter previously studied at Queens' School in Bushey.

Tony Bushby, 18, was remanded into custody at St Albans Crown Court by Judge Andrew Bright QC this morning.

He is accused of killing the 19-year-old in Beech Drive, Borehamwood.

Mr Bushby, of Digswell Close, Borehamwood, is set to appear again at the court for a plea hearing on March 14. A trial date has been set for July 2.

A second man who was arrested, a 26-year-old from Islington, has been released without charge.

Hertfordshire police said that Miss Wynter had known both men.
