Fantasist Lewis lured Watford man Hakim to his Merton Road home before stabbing him

Mujib Hakim's remains lay undiscovered for nearly three months Mujib Hakim's remains lay undiscovered for nearly three months

A fantasist who put together a kidnap kit and lured a vulnerable street entertainer to his home where he stabbed him 17 times was jailed for a minimum of 24 years today.

Josh Lewis targeted Mujib Hakim who was known as "The Michael Jackson dancer" because he danced to the singer's tracks and begged for money in Watford town centre.

After launching a brutal attack, Lewis buried the 40-year-old university graduate in his back garden, where his remains lay undiscovered for nearly three months.

Lewis, 21, of Merton Road, Watford, denied murder, but was convicted by the jury. On the judge's direction they found him not guilty of possessing a stun gun. He had pleaded guilty to a charge of obstructing the coroner.

His friend Kevin Keegan, 22, of Stroud Gate, Harrow, denied obstructing the coroner and was cleared by the jury. He said he had not been involved in burying the body.

Prosecutor Ann Evans told St Albans crown court that Mr Hakim, who was known as Hak, disappeared on May 27 last year. He had mental health problems and was being monitored by the Community Health Team.

She said: "As far as anyone knew Josh Lewis had no obvious connection to Mr Hakim. He lived very close to one of his regular begging spots outside Lloyds Bank so no doubt was familiar with him.

"Through careful analysis the police have pieced together a disturbing picture of Josh Lewis preparing to kill a vulnerable individual."

She said he had bought items for the killing from Watford's Poundland store. These included rubble sacks, two extra large plastic drop cloths, dusk masks and jumbo multi paper roll.

A black laptop bag found in Lewis's home was described by Mrs Evans as "very sinister indeed" and a 'kidnap kit.' She went on: "What the police found inside was a black cloth knife roll containing seven knives of varying sizes, a Tazer, a black plastic box with scalpels, a black torch, a roll of heavy duty plastic sacks, an apron, cable ties, gaffer tape, two face masks, a large disposable syringe, disposable gloves and a large plastic sheet.

"What an earth did he want with all of those?

"Mujib Hakim had disappeared without trace. At the scene of his killing there was hardly any forensic trace. You may think this laptop bag was the perfect gift to carry out such an awful act."

At 16.46 on May 27 CCTV showed Josh Lewis and Mujib Hakim by the Church Street car park in Watford.

Then, at 5 o'clock, more CCTV from Market Street showed Josh Lewis crossing the road to walk alongside Hak and then them turning around and walking back in the direction of Josh Lewis' house. Lewis was traced after a CCTV grab of the pair was published in the Watford Observer.

Two hours later, Josh Lewis arrived at Watford A & E complaining of a very deep cut to his left forearm. He claimed he had cut himself with a Stanley Knife while trying to fit a stair-gate, but the prosecution said he suffered it during the struggle which his victim who he stabbed 17 times, mainly in the back.

After the killing Lewis told his girlfriend Nola Montgomery that she should not go out of the back door of their home and should keep the windows shut because there was a problem with the sewers and they smelt.

He attended the hospital for more treatment to his arm, returning home on the 29 May. He went shopping to Wilkinsons, coming back he said with something to deal with the drain.

Neighbours Daniel Robinson and Jordan Glancy were disturbed during the night by a rustling aend digging noise. She jokingly suggested it was a body being buried.

Police enquiries continued and, on the 17 August, officers obtained a warrant to search Lewis' home. On the third day of the search, 19 August, Mr Hakim's body was found buried in an area of loose ground at the rear of the garden. He had been covered in a curtain, with his feet bound.

Sentencing him to life with a minimum term 24 years less the 156 days Lewis had spent in custody, Judge Stephen Gullick said: "It was a frenzied and ferocious" murder. The" judge said "very considerable force" had been used with wounds through the shoulder blade, a number of ribs, the aorta, heart, lungs and liver.

He said the crime had been aggravated because Lewis had lured Mr Hakim back to his home with the promise of either cigarettes or drugs, the victim was vulnerable and he had concealed his body in his garden.

After the case Detective Chief Inspector Steve Collins said: "This was a complex case as Mujib disappeared without a trace. He had no known enemies and was described by his family and associates as a peaceful man who spent his time as a street entertainer in Watford - where he was well known for his Michael Jackson impressions."

He went on to say: "When we searched the home of Josh Lewis we discovered the body of Mujib Hakim had been buried in the back garden. We also found what I would describe as a kidnap kit which consisted of an adapted stun gun, plastic sheeting, dust masks, cables ties, a torch, syringes, gaffer tape, plastic aprons and disposable gloves, all items were being kept in a laptop bag.

"There clearly was an element of planning involved with the murder. He targeted Mr Hakim because he saw him as a vulnerable individual."

"Josh Lewis is a manipulative man. He is also a fantasist and a young man I would regard as extremely dangerous."

Is that the same Nola Montgomery who was cut off by O2 for excessive data use, and who's picture graced the Watford Observer last year on May 25th, just two days before Hak disappeared?

This dude makes Dr. Murray look like an altar boy. This world is so screwed up. Michael' s spirit is back to haunt us. On another somber note, Joe Jackson launched a cheesy line of perfumes a few days ago in Vegas, yikes!

What a waste of life. Just because he felt like it. This man was harmless and didn't bother anyone. And very intelligent by all accounts, before his illness took over. I do remember seeing him at the charter place dancing away. He was funny. Rest in peace.

I don't think they have. I'm curious as to the relationship 'lil princess' has with this case. 'lil princess', your comment doesn't make much sense, but it does convey that you are pleased with the sentence (which, IMHO, seems fitting given the almost unbelievable circumstances that the jury have accepted in this case - this is an evil on a par with the Wests and Fritzl).

Has the WO any comment about the fact that their reporter/photographe
r appears to have been in the murder house only days before the atrocity? It seems like they had a narrow escape if the 'choice' of victim was as arbitrary as it was.

I'm guessing that the woman in this article

is the same one as named in the court report, given the address, age, name etc. and that the picture may have been taken at the house (which is referred to as "their home" in this article), though it could equally have been taken at the woman's place of work.

Lewis stole an expensive package left with him by a courier because I was at work. I went round there and asked him about it. He denied all knowledge and had a cold, dead look in his eyes. I thought he was a low life for stealing from neighbours - but killing them? Haks' body was just laying in his garden the whole time. Mujib Hakim, rest in peace. Thank God Josh Lewis was caught because, from what this article is saying, he wouldn't have stopped with that poor man.

Lil Princess is the mother of his son. His son would often be at the house although she never lived there.

Unfortunately this whole thing has effected real people. Its not an episode of Eastenders and a real man has died so it would be nice if people remembered that. Its a sombre affair.

Thank you for that clarification, keith789654. You are quite right, of course. That there are people who carry out such evil and destructive acts living in and amongst us is a grim reminder of the dark-side of man.

Given the nature of this story I would have expected the grammar police to show more respect to fellow WO readers. Quite clearly this lady has been involved in and has been gravely upset by this case (a man's brutal murder, let's remember) and such comments appear petty at best. A tragic case and a truly shocking and disturbing crime.

It's funny how nothing was said about the knife being owned by hakim,or the fact that he was a class A drug addict. Does anyone know Josh Lewis had stab wounds? Also it doesn't mention how Hakim Broke into Joshes house, asking for a girl names Lisa who he used to date, that actually lived there before josh. its funny how the media can change the perception of the masses. I'm not on anyones side, i just know the media have manipulated the story for a good news report.

I don't understand what you mean Tom - Because Hak was an A class drug user he deserved to be brutally attached?? Josh Lewis had one stab wound to his arm hak had 17 to his whole body does this not seem slightly OTT! I assume Tom that you do not understand the concept of Mental Health Issues? In some cases (Such as Hak's) change's do not register within their minds so he clearly thought that 'Lisa' still lived at the property and meant no harm does this again justify Lewis' actions. I do agree with one thing you say that the media does manipulate the stories but if they did not would we all read the news??? Thoughts are with the family!

"The media have manipulated the story." Really? And how have they done that? The WO has reported only what went on in the court case - a case that ended with this man being found guilty of an appalling murder.

Unfortunately, this isn't a story that needs a lot of manipulating: a well known man goes missing and his body is discovered in a shallow garden grave after a brutal stabbing...I think it speaks for itself.

Don't shoot the messenger.

A sad story, sick in fact, anybody who could do something like this needs to be locked away for a very long time. Personally I think anybody using knives, bottles, even say martial arts or fighting training is a coward

I agree CBenali1979, people who commit acts like this deserve to be put away. I believe however they should be placed in maximum security institutions for the rest of their days as they pose a threat to society.

As to the second part of your post, in my opinion, anyone who uses a weapon (or their fists if trained in any kind of martial arts/fighting training) obvioulsy has the intent to cause serious damage to others so whether murder is the end result or not in those cases, the offender should be removed from mainstream society and given the same sentencing as if they had killed.

Josh Lewis did have a stab wound in one arm, most likely sustained as Hakim desperately tried to fight off his crazed, sick, frenzied attacker. Who actually said Hakim broke into Lewis's house? Josh Lewis? Can we trust the word of this man who kept Hakim buried in his garden for 3 months? Who says Hakim kept asking for a girl called Lisa who he used to date? Again its Lewis - can you really believe that? After all no one can really verify that as true - the only person who can is dead. There may have been a Lisa in Hakim's life but if there was Lewis probably got that information from elsewhere while he was waiting for his trial. Something else to keep up his sleeves to add to his pack of lies in his defence. Read the description of Hakim's injuries again - Judge Stephen Gullick said: "It was a frenzied and ferocious" murder. The" judge said "very considerable force" had been used with wounds through the shoulder blade, a number of ribs, the aorta, heart, lungs and liver." Most of these stab wounds were in the back, hardly, so I don't think Lewis was defending himself. He's guilty alright. Guilty as hell.

So what if Hakim did have Schizophrenia? Hakim was a 40 year old man, he'd lived a life and his history didn't show any extreme violent acts against anyone. In fact most people have said he was harmless and wouldn't hurt anyone. Lewis on the other hand was a young man, an unknown quantity, unfortunately a sick, evil, morally bankrupt individual just waiting to blossom into a murderer.

Well to be quite honest this isn't your run of the mill knife attack/ robbery. Its a wicked, planned murder executed in the murderers house with extreme and excessive force.

If you come at someone with a knife and get stabbed you only have yourself to blame. However, a jury of his piers viewed this as a calculated murder.

TRT says...

If you believe your actions were justified given the circumstances you were in, you do not hide the body, mislead a police investigation and destroy evidence. It is the actions after this crime that have damned the culprit. Anyone innocent would have contacted the police immediately.

keith789654 says...

TRT, I completely agree. It is the actions after the crime that have shown his true character. A character that is clearly manipulative and deceitful, using every opportunity to twist reality to suit his goals - and do so with without any compassion for others. Its almost as if the whole scenario has filled him with a perverse sense of satisfaction.
