The long-awaited revamp of a Bovingdon landmark is finally set to begin this week.
After years of planning, workers have begun revamping the pond in Bovingdon Green.
The revamp is being funded by £8,960 from the National Lottery, £500 from Hertfordshire County Council’s locality budget and the Fields in Trust has given £2,500 to rejuvenate the pond area.
The Fields in Trust cash was added after the Green was awarded special status by the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge.
Work to clear debris began on Monday and in the coming weeks, machinery will be used to dredge the pond before planting commences. The main pond works will last for two days and start on Monday, February 20.
After the main pond clearance, further work will be undertaken to provide a footpath and to install some benches and an area for wheelchairs. Arrangements are also in hand to provide an interpretation board, but this will not be in situ for some time.
According to Bovingdon Parish Council clerk Mike Kember, the aim of the project is to create a tranquil environment, to provide better recreational facilities for people and to learn about the history of the area, and the importance of providing areas for wildlife.
He said: “This revamp has been two to three years in the planning. At first, it will look a lot like a bomb site, but once the flowers are in bloom it should be stunning. St Lawrence Church has donated some benches, made from yew trees, which will also be put in.
“The revamp will make such a difference to the area and hopefully the pond will become a lovely focal point in the green.”
