Watford MP Richard Harrington has held a meeting with health secretary Andrew Lansley to stress how important the Health Campus project is to the future of Watford.
The new road, which will run from the back of the Watford General Hospital site across Wiggenhall Road to Dalton Way, is seen as a key component of the £1bn Health Campus project, which will see a complete redevelopment of the area.
Although the road project will cost more than £7 million, bosses at the hospital said that would enable the project to get started.
Conservative Mr Harrington said: "I was grateful to have the opportunity to meet with Andrew Lansley today to discuss the health matters important to people in Watford.
"At the top of this is investment in the future of NHS services, specifically the new Health Campus. At the meeting I was able to thank him for the commitment his department has already made with the Health Campus road which will be vital in increasing the ease of access and speed for emergency vehicles as well as playing a fundamental part in the Health Campus.
"I know just how important the hospital and the NHS is to people in Watford and I was pleased to be able to raise these issues with the health secretary who has taken all of these points into consideration."
