Bushey residents encouraged to get involved in their community

A drive to get more Bushey residents involved in their community starts with a public meeting later this month.

Run by charity Community Action Hertsmere, the Take Part project aims to engage residents in issues, projects and services in the village.

The first meeting will take place at the community centre at Bushey Golf and Country Club, in High Street, on February 23 at 10.30am.

For more information, telephone Cindy Sedman on 02082074504.

Well here's a fundamentally important question ......just where is "Bushey"? And how are we going to identify a Bushey community?

There is an attractive area we all know as "Bushey Heath". And there is a well known railway station called "Bushey" but it is in Oxhey Village. Then there is the former Bushey Hall school half way in between.

Just to complicate matters further I would hazard a guess that the best known landmark in the area is called "Bushey Arches". And that is well and truly in Watford!

So I would say that Community Action Hertsmere have no chance whatever of making progress. Does anyone disagree?

I completely and utterly disagree!
First, i have no idea of which part of Bushey Heath is more attractive than Bushey Village.
How about the Royal Masonic school in the Avenue? What about the Rose Garden? St James church, one of the oldest in Herts and in the Doomsday book? The award-winning Bushey Museum? Three Green Flag parks? A world famous art school run by a man who was knighted in England and Germany, then was given the Legion d'honeur in France for good measure?
Watford would kill to be like Bushey, and Oxhey only exists because of 'Bushey' station railway worker houses! Until a couple of hundred years ago, the Heath was just that. A Heath. A wasteland that required armed guards to cross it. It hasn't changed that much in that respect.

I suspect the "armed guards" were for Stanmore Common surely?
But the basic point is this....Bushey doesn't seem to have a clear boundary and hence will find it diffficult to establish an identity plus a sense of community.

Oxhey Village is estate agent speak for Bushey Arches, North Bushey is Estate Agent for the Mill Way Estate.

I agree the boundries are not well defined, but that isn't unique in this age of urban sprawl.
Travellers to London would gather at the Three Crowns to cross the Heath (and Common) in groups for safety. However, much like the Thuggees of India, some bandits would often pretend to be merchants and join them, only to meet their colleagues halfway across... So as I say, a bit like catching a 142 night bus.

Oxhey Village is not a village, or is it Bushey! It's OXHEY!

Villiers Road and Capel Road have lost two sweet shops, a grocer, and a "chippie" since 1982 when I first moved in so I suppose - yes, you could argue that Oxhey is no longer a village. But that area does have clear boundaries (unlike Bushey) and is well represented by OVEG to foster an excellent sense of community.
So my argument remains, Bushey will struggle to create a community spirit as it has no clearly defined boundaries (or heart for that matter).
Consider too the secondary schools and ask the question what proportion of their students come from outside Bushey (indeed outside Hertfordshire!).

Sorry...but Oxhey never was a village!
