Views sought on whether to cap Watford taxi numbers

People in Watford are being asked for their views on whether the number of taxis in the town should be capped.

Following an independent report, Watford Borough Council’s licensing committee will be considering whether to limit the number of taxi licences it issues next month.

The number of licences is currently unlimited and will only be capped if councillors believe there is no unmet demand for taxis in the area.

The independent report and the draft action plan can be viewed at the Watford Town Hall Customer Service Centre, or on the council’s website at: http://tinyurl.com/taxi-survey-documents.

Comments can be made by March 5 either at http://tinyurl.com/2012-taxi-survey or by writing to: Licensing, Watford Borough Council, Town Hall, Watford, Herts, WD17 3EX or emailing licensing@watford.gov.uk.

The numbers are not important, if there are lots of taxi they have to share the work.... more importantly get them to read the highway code and check if they have even passed a driving test.. the standard of most of there driving is at least appalling and some times reckless

1 Cap the numbers
2 Make sure Drivers pay tax and have checks put in place.
3 Cab firm needs to be abiding by all laws.
4 Jobs for drivers needs to be equal so its not monopolised with ethnicity or friends or family.

Before the cap on the number of taxis was lifted a few years ago there was often a long wait at Watford Junction station for a cab.

Any reintroduction of a cap would need to make sure that there was plenty of supply to meet demand around the town, especially at peak times.

I think they should be cleaned. Some look and smell like slums.

I say no cap in principal. Because would SHOULD happen is competition drives the price down and the service levels up. However, I am in no doubt that price fixing is already taking place between the major players of the taxi/private hire firms. They swap cars and drivers around often enough between each other, not to mention insurance certificates and lisences.

Taxi (Hackney) prices are set by the council. Private hire rates fluctuate based on whim of driver it seems.

cap them, there are far too many Taxi's. they park up everywhere without any consideration for other drivers or pedestrians.

Most of the trouble with taxis is caused by too many cabs after too little work for most of the day and night. The present arrangement is a fiasco with too many drivers working long hours or overcharging to try and make a living.

These robbing g""ts should all be put up against a wall and shot. £18 to get from the top of the town to Garston is extortion.

The same journey from a local taxi company (not allowed to pick up from the top of the town) is £10.

Why such a difference ?

Come on Dotty sort it out.
