A new specialist task-force has been set up to combat metal theft in Hertfordshire, following a rise in thefts of vehicle exhausts.
Operation Devon was set up after an increase in catalytic converters thefts across the county, particularly from vans.
The thefts are occurring at all times of the day and night across the county with industrial estates in particular being targeted.
The team will focus on catching cross-border criminals, as well as working with scrap metal dealers to restrict the market for thieves.
Detective chief inspector Liz Hanlon, who leads the team said: “Look out for people hanging around vehicles at unusual times and make sure you make use of your drive or a garage if you have one.
“We’re also experiencing a rise in theft of number plates and tools from vans so the message extends to everyone to be vigilant, secure your vehicles and report suspicious activity straight away.”
There was a spate of catalytic converter thefts and attempted thefts in South Oxhey at the end of January, where in one weekend four Mercedes vans were targetted.
In the same weekend, two catalytic converters were stolen from vans in Watford.
