Fourteenth Century philosophy and methodological principles aren’t normally at the top of people’s agendas when deciding what to do for a night out, but that’s the premise behind the work of aerial theatre company Ockham’s Razor, coming to artsdepot in North Finchley early in March.

The methodological principle of English Franciscan friar and scholastic philosopher William of Ockham has it that, between two plausible theories, the simpler is preferable, and this reflects the group’s work: go for the simpler theory and keep the work cogent, artful and easily grasped.

The critically acclaimed group uses unusual pieces of theatre equipment in a surreal and innovative combination of circus and physical theatre.

Rather than paint the circus performer as a superhuman character capable of impressive feats, Ockham’s Razor makes work that draws on the human and the real, where the characters go through recognisable experiences, emotions and conflicts which the audience can identify with and relate to.

The company’s work focuses on the relationships between people in the air; creating stories from the vulnerability, trust and reliance that exists between them. In this triple bill, Ockham’s Razor presents three works, contrasting in theme and tone, which showcase its inventive style.

For this show, they will be presenting a triple bill of their shorter pieces: Arc, Memento Mori and Every Action...

In Arc, three people find themselves stranded together, suspended in the air. It examines the instability of a triangle where relationships form and break apart and explores the experience of isolation in close proximity.

Memento Mori is an award-winning, powerful duet performed on a suspended metal frame. It is based on Holbein’s woodcuts of The Dance of Death, where death is represented as a skeleton that dances each one of us to our grave.

Every Action… is a playful look at the bonds that form when people are thrown together. Four strangers meet before 25 metres of suspended rope and discover a world where everything they do will affect someone, somewhere.

On Saturday, March 31 Ockham’s Razor will be back at artsdepot to perform Something In The Air, an interactive adventure for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities or an autistic spectrum disorder. The show will be a multi-sensory experience, with audience members suspended in nest-chairs where they can swing, bounce and sway along with the aerial performers.

Ockham’s Razor: Triple Bill is at artsdepot, Nether Street, North Finchley on Thursday, March 1 at 7.30pm. Details: 020 8369 5454, www.artsdepot.co.uk or www.ockhamsrazor.co.uk.
