Vice chairman of Watford Borough Council, Councillor Andrew Mortimer, hosted the launch of Fairtrade Fortnight with a coffee morning at The Colosseum on Monday.

The coffee morning was attended by four borough councillors, supporters from 10 churches, representatives from Watford Credit Union, Watford Fairtrade Steering Group and others.

Councillor Mortimer said: "Fairtrade has helped many poor farmers and their families to have a better life and Watford Fairtrade Town is proud to be part of this."

The theme for the fortnight, is "Take a Step for Fairtrade in 2012".

Supporters were asked to sign a pledge to take a new step by buying an extra or new Fairtrade product, talking to colleagues at work about Fairtrade, or by holding an event to raise awareness.

A Fairtrade stand will be held in The Harlequin shopping centre from Friday, March 2, uuntil Monday, March 5.

Other events include a Big Brew Fairtrade Tea Party at St Andrew’s Church in Church Road, Watford, from 3pm to 4.30pm on Saturday, March 3; a chocolate event at Watford Girls Grammar School; Fairtrade stalls at Christ Church in St Albans Road and at St Helen’s Church in The Harebreaks; and Fairtrade Assemblies in Schools across Watford.
