Workers at the Watford-based head offices of Mothercare face an uncertain future after the chain announced they face possible redundancies.
Staff at the headquarters in Cherry Tree Road were told yesterday that the company is starting a 30-day consultation over plans to reduce its costs at the offices.
The announcement comes after a tough couple of years for the retail chain, which has seen its profits and share price slump.
Last autumn the company put its whole business under review after suffering losses of more than £80m.
Following yesterday’s announcement to staff at the Watford head office, Mothercare issued a statement saying: “As part of the ongoing structural review process, Mothercare has reviewed its head office functions and identified opportunities to simplify the structure and decrease the central cost base.
“Following an internal announcement to staff, some of our head office staff will be entering a consultation process that will last 30 days.
"We will be working closely with affected employees to support them through this process. This announcement does not affect store staff.”
