Watford Harriers picked up a large medal haul at the Hertfordshire AAA County Championships at Woodside Stadium.

Fiona McQuire led the girls with four individual medals in the Under-15 age group, winning gold in the discus and finishing first in the triple jump with a new championship record of 10.05m. She also won silver medals in the javelin and pole vault.

U-17 Chloe Rixon dominated the horizontal jumps winning gold in the long jump and silver in the triple jump. U-13 Remi Jessop sprinted to victory to claim gold in the 100m and speedily followed this with a silver medal in the 200m.

In the boys’ events, U-15 Matthew Lally jumped to medal success winning gold in the high jump and silver in the long jump.

For the U-17s, Matthew Hall cruised to gold in the 100m hurdles while Mark Gurney won the shot putt and Ben Rochford claimed silver in the 1500m. Jack Noone was second in the U-20s triple jump.

In the senior events, Ray McKenna threw winners in the shot, discus and hammer to take a gold medal in each event. Zoe McQuire took gold in the veteran women’s discus, silver in the shot and bronze in the hammer. Douglas McQuire won silver medals in the veteran men’s hammer, shot and discus events.

The Harriers girls relay teams completed the medal collection with the U-15s (Charlotte Radcliffe, Jessop, Emi Economu and Fiona McQuire) taking the silver medal in the 100m relay and the U-15s (Rebecca Wilkinson, Louise Hall, Economu and Fiona McQuire) picking up silver in the 400m relay.

The U-17 relay squad (Charlotte Fuller, Paige Smith, Leah Parry and Chloe Dearman) won the 400m relay and finished second in the 100m event.

In other action at the championships, Sue Yeomans continued her fine form winning the W55 pole vault with 2.50. But the surprise of the competition was fellow W55 competitor Christine James who entered her first pole vault despite not training for over a year and gained a silver medal with a vault of 2.00.

The pair went on to compete in the hammer event when the result was reversed with James taking the gold and Yeomans the silver.

Also in action was Paralympic potential athlete Michael Pope F40, who has recently appeared at the Olympic Stadium at the Paralympic Games Test event and the UK school games collecting podium positions at both events.

Pope won both shot and discus at the County Championships with a personal best in the shot with a winning throw of 8.66.

Rickmansworth School's Chloe McCarthy completed the 100m and 200m in PB times of 12.60 and 25.91.

In the U-17 events, Watford Grammar School for Girls' Suzanne Bentley won the 80m hurdles before taking silver in the 300m hurdles. Yasmin Lakin won the triple jump in a championship best of 11.35. Sophie Macken came fourth in the discus before going on to win the shot.

Westfield School U-20 student Chelsea Shurland came second in the 400m with a time of 60.28.

Rickmansworth School’s Claire Bentley achieved the double winning both the 100m and 400m hurdles event while Renee Hector, coached by Malcolm Wallace at Woodside, won the discus with a championship best 38:18.

Croxley Green based Rachel Bentley, and the third sister to be competing at the championships, gained two silvers in the senior women’s 400m hurdles and javelin.

In the men’s events, Saturday saw the Masters get off to a great start with Tim Saunders-Mullins gain a gold in the M55 shot with a respectable 9.07 putt.

He went on to win the M55 Hammer before finishing the day with third place in the discus. In the 65 plus age group it was a welcome return to competition for Brian Yeomans who immediately proved he is a winner by collecting silver in the discus and javelin.

In the U-20’s men’s event it was the turn of Westfield School's Ashley Kavanagh-King to turn the form book on its head when he won the pole vault in his only second outing before gaining bronze in the shot.

West Herts College student Chris Lines won the discus with a throw of 40.55 and the shot with a putt of 10.70.

At the parallel success championships, Parminters School student Mitchell Dutton, an F38 Paralympic hopeful, walked away with two golds and one silver.

All were achieved with PBs winning the shot with 8.60 and the javelin in 31.68 before completing his hat-trick of medals with a 29.58 throw in the discus.
