Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School pupil Freddie Wright to carry Olympic Torch through Cotton End, Bedfordshire

A schoolboy is getting ready to carry the Olympic Torch this Sunday.

Freddie Wright, 12, who lives in Radlett, will carry the torch through Cotton End in Bedfordshire, on Sunday, July 8, at 10.50am.

He was nominated by his school, Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School, in Butterfly Lane, Elstree, via London’s Get Set programme, which aims to involve young people in the excitement of the 2012 Games.

The school nominated him in recognition of his exceptional contributions to school sport. He is one of just 212 twelve-year-olds to be picked across the country.

Freddie said: "I am extremely excited and very much looking forward to Sunday. I feel honoured to be selected and can't wait to be part of such an historic event."

Freddie is an active sportsman. He plays for the school cricket, rugby and hockey teams, has trialled for the county hockey team, and has been selected to represent Hertfordshire at cricket with his year group.

He also plays for Radlett Cricket Club, as well as hockey for Harpenden and golf for Porters Park.

His mother, Rachel Wright says she was "very excited". She added: "We’re very proud parents."

Director of external relations for the school, Dr Peter Spence, said: "We are delighted that Haberdashers’ Boys’ School will be involved in carrying the Olympic Torch.

"Freddie is an outstanding athlete and he truly deserves to represent the school. His achievements exemplify the spirit of the Olympics."

Freddie’s run will be shown live on the BBC red button and on the BBC website.
