A Bushey teenager is hoping to save his way to stardom, after being signed up as goalkeeper for football team Cambridge United.

Will Norris, a student at Queens’ School Sports Academy in Aldenham Road, signed with the team last week, on a two-year deal from Royston Town.

He impressed in Royston Town’s championship-winning campaign last season, making more than 40 appearances in his debut at Garden Walk.

As part of the arrangement, Will will be loaned back to his former club for the duration of the 2012/13 season.

The 18-year-old, who is studying for his English A level and a triple BTEC national diploma in sports science, said he was delighted to have been given the opportunity to sign for the club.

The Bushey resident: "I've been really impressed with the training here and the attitude of the club.

"Jez George (Cambridge United manager) has been tremendously welcoming me and has really made me feel a part of everything.

"I want to thank Royston, I really enjoyed my time there and am thankful for all the support they've given me, especially Paul Attfield (Royston Town manager) and chairman Steve Jackson.

"I think it's a good arrangement that I continue playing for them under the loan agreement next season, they have gone up a level and Jez and I agree it's important that I continue to gain playing experience as well as training full-time with Lance Key (goalkeeping coach).

"I feel this is a positive career move for me as the facilities and environment here are perfect for a player of my age and aspirations to develop further.

"Special thanks should also go to Dave Reddington and James Russell at Queens' Academy for all the work they have done with me over the last three years. That work has undoubtedly played a crucial role in my development as a goalkeeper."

David Reddington, head of the sports academy, praised Will's hard work.

He said: "Will deserves this opportunity as he has worked fantastically hard over the time he has spent with us. He now has the chance to have a long career as a professional footballer.

"This is great news for everybody involved at Queens' and it will give others hope that the same can happen to them."
