High Sheriff opens Green Canteen in Garston

A new horticultural project providing gardening opportunities for all has opened in Garston.

The Green Canteen in Garsmouth Way, developed by Herts Mind Network and Watford Community Housing Trust , offers horticultural courses and an opportunity to learn new skills by growing fruit vegetables and plants.

The produce is sold to the community, with all proceeds reinvested back into the project.

Tina Barnard, chief executive of Watford Community Housing trust, said: “Just a few days from the Trust’s fifth birthday, it’s a great symbol of our commitment not only to improving the community but offering opportunities too.”

Further income will be generated by a trading shed on the site, selling recycled gardening items such as tools, pots and garden furniture.

The site was opened by the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, The Hon Arabella Stuart Smith.

She congratulated those who put the partnership together, adding: “It is a real asset for those who live here, an opportunity for everyone to enjoy growing, or buying, fresh local produce.”
