Police officers in Watford managed to track a stolen smartphone to north London using an app installed on it.

Hertfordshire Constabulary were alerted after the victim’s iPhone went missing in Watford High Street on Wednesday.

Using the Find my iPhone application on the phone officers located the device in Kilburn.

A 16-year-old was later given a reprimand for theft.

Neighbourhood Sergeant for Watford Town Centre, Simon Mason said: “Your mobile phone stores vital information, personal details but losing it can be inconvenient and stressful, particularly with smart phones.

“There are real benefits to this software, such as allowing people to be sure whether their phone has been simply lost or has been stolen, it can help police trace it and identify those responsible.

“If at any time you believe it might have been stolen you’re urged to contact police with the location so we can investigate. We don’t want people to put themselves at risk by confronting a thief.”

It's only a £500 phone that he stole. It also used police resources to track and catch the culprit.

A reprimand is ridiculous, he's a thief.

If he went into a shop and stole £500 would he get the same punishment?

If he stole a handbag with £500 in?

If he burgled £500 from a home?

It really is about time the police took crime (including phone crime) seriously, and the courts more so.

A reprimand is no deterrent at all, in fact it's just a joke.

Agree with everything above, but the problem for the Police is, if the thief said he found the phone, they have to prove otherwise. Frustrating for the Police just as it is for the victim, but better this way than a Totalitarian State that punishes without evidence.
