Thousands yet to register for forthcoming elections

Thousands of people in Hertsmere are at risk of losing their vote in the first-ever elections for the Police and Crime Commissioner elections.

According to Hertsmere Borough Council , about 8,000 households could lose their chance to have their say if they do not return their electoral registration form by Wednesday, October 31.

Over the last two months, residents will have received an electoral registration form with details of everyone who is eligible to vote living at the property. This form must be returned to Hertsmere Borough Council .

Donald Graham, electoral registration officer for Hertsmere said: "Some people wrongly assume that paying council tax means you are registered to vote. You have to be on the electoral register if you want to have your say in the first Police and Crime Commissioner elections.

"If you care about crime and policing issues in your local area and want to make your voice heard, then I urge you to return your form as soon as possible."

Those who have not received, or have lost, the form can call 020 8207 7481 or print off a registration form at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk. Check details are correct by visiting: www.elecreg.co.uk/hertsmere.

The Police and Crime Commissioner will be responsible for ensuring the policing needs of Hertfordshire are met, with the election taking place on Thursday, November 15.

I don't think the 'powers that be' get it.

WE DON'T CARE.

We just want the police to do their job. We don't want to be policed in a Labour manner, or a Liberal manner, or a Tory manner. What is the difference anyway?

The police are there to uphold the law and politics has no place or influence in that.
Politicians MAKE the laws. Policemen enforce them. I will definately not be voting on this very simple principal.

If we end up with a Labour run police force under a Tory government (or vice versa) then we are simply asking for trouble as we all know politicians spend a lot of their time scoring cheap points off each other, usually at our expense.
This can only make the police less efficient than they already are.

Just look how councils constantly blame central government and central government constantly blame local government for just about everything?
A smokescreen for nobody doing anything about the actual problem.

And now that is what we will get with our police force.

100% agree. I won't be voting either, and for the same reasons.

All i'll say is if a complete numpty is voted in as commisioner then you three had better not complain about it.

What choice is there? Only a complete numpty would apply for the job, so we will get one no matter what.
The Lib-Dem has dropped out, so we will get a Labour or a Tory.

A Labour one will spend all his time telling us he can't do his job because of central government policy, and a Tory one will tell us he can't do his job because of years of neglect by the previous government.

It is about as pointless as pointless gets, and certainly will not improve the Police Force.

I think there is evidence, and certainly precedent. We constantly complain about our politicians but very rarely about our Army Generals.

Generals decide HOW to fight, but not WHO to fight, so we respect them to get on with the job. We certainly don't vote them in on the grounds of their politics, how glossy their leaflets are or how well they perform at a press conference.
The same principals should apply to the police. It is a responsible job with clear boundries; we want efficiency, not political debate.

Generals may decide how to fight but they play the political game too!

As i said, you're using precedence to judge totally different people. Wonderful and very undemocratic. No wonder you dont want to vote, lol

So are you saying you support a politically motivated police force Tony?

So if area A has a turn out of 70% mostly voting for you, and their biggest worry is car crime, and Area B, whose turn out is only 20% but their biggest fear is all the murders going on and few of them voted for you, what would a politician spend the money on to keep your £75K job?

What would an impartial professional spend the effort on?
