Free lunchtime jazz at St Mary's Church proves a big hit

A free music concert at St Mary’s Church, Watford, proved a huge success this lunchtime.

Host Derek Mander, founder of The Jazz Workshop in Croxley Green, said he organised the hour-long event in a bid to bring music to the masses.

Crowds gathered at the church in Church Street, for performances by Mr Mander on the piano, Mike Sherwood on vocals, Wally Shaw on bass, John Ridge on trombone, and Ronnie Findon on clarinet.

Popular favourites played at the event included Georgia On My Mind, Have You Met Miss Jones and The Girl From Ipanema.

As a lifelong jazz lover, I wish I'd been there. This sounds like a splendid use of a church to me!

One thing about listening to music in a church is that they do tend to have marvellous acoustics.
