Neighbours commended after helping to catch burglar
4:10pm Thursday 20th September 2012 in News
Neighbours whose public-spiritedness led to the capture of a Watford burglar received a commendation from the Hertfordshire High Sheriff and a £250 reward today.
Kevin Collins was suspicious after looking out of an upstairs window and noticing a woman walking up driveways in Parkside Drive and then returning to a BMW car, which had its engine running.
In nearby Cassiobury Drive, Dr David Dalton saw a man from the car scale the gates of a neighbours' house. He also dialled 999 while his wife Catherine bravely went to investigate.
At St Albans crown court Judge Andrew Bright QC said Mrs Dalton heard glass smash from the back of the house and two men opened a gate and ran off. She and her husband chased after the men's BMW.
Thanks to the calls from Mr Collins and Dr Dalton the car was stopped and the men were arrested in Hempstead Road shortly afterwards on the morning of December 16 last year.
At the time, one of the men had been released on licence from a 40 month sentence passed at Reading crown court for burglaries. He is due in court later.
Judge Bright said: "If it had not been for the good work of these three people they might have got away."
