Toy library given £750 grant for new barcode system

Rickmansworth toy library has installed a computerised barcode lending system after the county council donated £750.

The new “toy tracker software” will create a faster and more efficient lending service for the library, which is run by volunteers.

The library, a charity, has 150 members and holds fortnightly sessions at Mill End Community Centre, where members can bring their children to play for free.

They can then pay between 20p and £4 to borrow a toy until the next session.

The money came from a locality budget. A total of £10,000 is available to each of the 77 members of Hertfordshire County Council to spend on worthwhile community projects in their area.

Money must be burning a hole in the council's pocket. There is no other way of justifying this spend in a time of recession (or probably any other time).

There's quite a lot of people who at the best of times cant afford more than just the bare essentials for their children, and sometimes not even that. So in times of recession I would say supporting schemes that support the poorest people in the community is justified
