Councillor Chris Leslie resigns seat to take up new job in Midlands
3:20pm Wednesday 3rd October 2012 in News
A Watford councillor has resigned his seat triggering a by-election in the central area of the town.
Chris Leslie, a Liberal Democrat who represented central ward, stood down after starting a new job this week in the Midlands following a period out of employment.
Although no date has been set it is likely the by-election to find his replacement will happen at the same time as the police and crime commissioner elections on November 15.
Following the news of Mr Leslie’s resignation Watford’s elected Liberal Democrat mayor Dorothy Thornhill paid tribute to role in the town’s politics as an advocate for younger people.
She said: "Chris has always been a passionate advocate for the night time economy and young people in the town, that’s always been his thing.
"It was just that reminder that the town is not just full of middle-aged people but there is a younger element as well."
Mr Leslie was first elected in 2002 and went on to re-election in 2006 with a majority of 248 and then again in 2010 with a smaller majority of 71.

Leslie is and was a complete waste of space; wasn't he very nearly beaten into second place by a handful of votes the last time he stood?

Another chance to put another dent in Dorothy's council and elect any party other than the Liberals.

up to your old mischief again?
Don't bother putting "we won't spend any money on anything" in quotes, because it's something you have just made up out of thin air and falsely attributed to me.
You're not the love child of that other poster who keeps making things up are you? Whatsisname, oh yes, Clarkie, that's it.
- I have never made that point nor would I. Only a stupid person would think the council could run on no budget. However, a clever person could try (and succeed) to reduce that budget by a significant amount whilst maintaining services if waste was cut from council spending and woolly Liberal thinking.
Do you work for the council Nascot, do you receive paid consultancy from the council or one of its pet projects? I think you do. Is that what you are afraid of - the council gravy train drying up?
Let me tell you this, when we get into council we will do our utmost to stop the gravy train.
I have campaigned against Liberal wastage at the local council, wasting our money on vanity projects or projects of little or no value. What value a bridge over the pond, eh Nascot?
I campaign on choosing what to spend money on, using the method of "Is it neccessary, is it worthwhile, does it have to be spent?" and "Don't spend more money on something than it takes to get the job done"
- in other words not wasting money in the first place and getting value for money on what is actually spent in the interests of the residents of Watford.
If you can't support that then more fool you, and Watford doesn't need fools driving the council, it's got plenty in place already.
If you and your Liberal friends want to pay more tax than necessary and waste it on projects of little or no value, (Purple flags, bridges...) then that is your right whilst you are in power. Just don't be surprised if the spendthrift Liberals get kicked out at the elections by those who disagree with you, those with common sense who know that they can spend a pound and get far more value from it than the council ever could.
If your ethos really is to waste money then I hope you are in a very small majority in Watford. So that's you, Dotty and the remainder of her loyal but misguided merry men. Anyone apart from Dotty, Nascot and a few nutty Liberals think that wasting tax money is a good idea?
Thought not!
Nascot, you have let yourself down by making things up. I thought you might have been a little better than that. It seems on this occasion, I had credited you with more integrity than you deserve.

A simple yes or no, no need to rant about dotty and her Councillors, although if you wish to I have no complaint, just please answer the question first.

I met this councillor several years ago in the town centre as he was checking on all the street lights in his ward, reporting on those which were broken, shame other councillors cant seem to do this basic council work for their wards, i have so many lights out in Gammons Lane area and no one cares. He seemed liked he cared about his ward. Nice chap,

@ reg so that is a no is it?

Of course, if the local councillors manage to give the impression they are doing something useful whilst being a councillor then they are happy with that. For some of them it may be the only useful thing they do.
They therefore do it as volunteers, the same as you or I would, and report it in the same way to county council for repair.
This morning I reported a gas leak down my road, a far more serious issue - I don't expect any payment for it, any decent person would do it. I've done similar things several times in the past 10 years.
Last year I reported a damaged lamp post that had to be removed as it was unsafe - it was cracked and leaning slightly above the crack. I went one step further by remaining with it and warning people from walking underneath it until it had been inspected by the police for safety, well over an hour. I thought it was unsafe.
I'm not a councillor, just a good citizen of Watford. I wonder how many councillors go around reporting potholes and out-of-order lamp posts when they are not either in office or hoping for office?
What I'm trying to say is that this is done by councillors and prospective councillors for cheap political advantage, rather than for more altruistic reasons like "doing the right thing for Watford".
It is therefore ridiculous for MaryWatford to argue they are doing a good job and worth the money for doing something that actually isn't their job at all, whilst all the time wasting huge amounts of council tax money on pet projects like the pond revamp. Money that could be spent better elsewhere by all accounts.
Basically, we need a better council.

Would you also stand on the -no fines to litter droppers either - manifesto

have you ever received pay for work done in the councils interest? A yes or no will suffice.
On policy matters and principles, it seems that you have either misunderstood my position on common sense or choose to misrepresent it willingly.
I am all for common sense in the approach to council and governing.
I am for low taxes, removing wasteful spending and taking a common-sense approach to enforcing by-laws.
By way of example, I am the sort of person who thinks it wrong to clamp cars and charge a fortune to get them released, often with the threat of menaces and much inconvenience. I am for giving people a warning if they break a minor law rather than imposing hefty fines for first offences.
We differ on such matters. I do not believe that fining people large amounts of money is the first and only solution to a problem (£75 is a large amount of money to a good many people).
So, in answer to your question, I would not agree to stand on "no fines for litterer droppers", it's not a policy I or any sensible person would support. I am (almost) surprised at you for suggesting it.
BTW, do you know Clarkie personally?
