People often get so tied up with the day to day, nose to grindstone, shoulder to wheel running of their business they simply don’t take the time to check they’re heading in the right direction. And of course, that’s not forgetting the blasts of doom and gloom that smack us in the face whenever we pick up a paper or switch on the TV. All of this tends to make us want to crawl back under the duvet rather than take the time to initiate better business practice.
Agreed, we may be negotiating some pretty choppy waters right now but taking a step back and a good hard look at every aspect of your company is a basic business essential which should never be neglected in good times or bad. It’s equally relevant whether you’re a sole trader, SME or PLC. You and your staff may be working your socks off but you need to make sure your efforts are producing the right results. A regular Sales, Purchases and Overheads review might show you where a corner could be cut, an economy made or an operation streamlined. It ensures you’re seeing the whole picture - and not through rose tinted glasses!
You should be making your review, a routine procedure that’s implemented as regularly and automatically as getting the car MOT’d or submitting your tax return. Your review results will either have you patting yourself on the back or smacking your head against the wall, but at least you’ll know you’re not running blind and spotting a hitch before it grows into a problem will save you time, money and stress.
