Whilst we may by now be just about recovering from the excesses of Christmas and the New Year, a cure to the hangover of both ‘Credit Crunch’ and ‘Recession’ may be a little harder to find. For many of us, the worst of the impact of last years financial crisis may still be to come.
Perhaps we all need a New Years resolution to be more enterprising in 2009 but what exactly does this mean? Whilst Enterprise is a word is used ad infinitum, few people when asked can succinctly define what it actually is.
Indeed, do we know what makes someone enterprising or not, as the case may be? Generally, most would agree that enterprise is about making ideas happen but there is many a good idea that has failed to become what the owner of that idea wanted it to be.
Of course, every one may want something different as it is not only money that makes the world go round, despite what the worlds financial markets would have us believe.
It is not just about making ideas happen; not even about creating ‘value’ from an idea but it is about creating the value that is wanted.
Creating the value that they want from their ideas is what successful people do. The list of ‘enterprise skills’ is as endless as the current recession promises to be. It is about being creative and innovative, solving problems, making tough decisions, and understanding the risks and consequences of the choices you make.
It is about communicating well, knowing your limitations and learning from the inevitable mistakes. Needless to say, it is also about the motivation and commitment to get things done.
‘Enterprise is for life, not just for Christmas’.
