Sports nutrient manufacturer and distributor Maximuscle of Caxton Way, Watford, have launched a campaign to ensure that a proposed new European law does not threaten business and jobs, and could instead open doors for them to take the European sports food market by storm.

Maximuscle employ 45 people at their Caxton Way site and supply sports nutrition products for some of Britain's top athletes including rugby players Josh Lewsey and Gavin Henson.

Hertfordshire Euro MP Richard Howitt visited the company on Friday last week to ensure that a proposed new European law on sports nutrition does not stifle the kind of innovation that has made Maximuscle a huge success.

He wants to make sure that safe and tested sports nutrition products can be more easily sold Europe-wide.

By promoting recognised standards, this law could open the door to seeing Maximuscle products placed on shelves across the continent creating new jobs and investment for Watford.

The sports nutrition market in the UK is estimated to grow to £202 million in 2010 and Europe-wide the market is potentially massive.

The MEP said: "Maximuscle is a company which has grown from humble beginnings over a decade ago into a recognised market leader in sports nutrition. I am keen that any European law must not threaten in any way this Watford success story, and that's why we are working now, securing jobs and investment.

"I am backing plans now in the earliest stage to make sure that Europe backs top quality and safe sports nutrition products such as those made here in Watford, promotes exercise, and backs the kind of innovation that has fuelled this Watford company. We must destroy any barriers to our local companies stretching their muscles across Europe."
