Head of law school wins national teaching fellowship

A University of Hertfordshire lecturer has been awarded a prestigious National Teaching Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy.

Penny Wiggins, Associate Head of the School of Law, was nominated for her outstanding and significant contribution to the University’s Blended Learning Unit.

Penny Wiggins has been instrumental in creating innovative and engaging teaching and learning techniques to help improve the learning experience of University of Hertfordshire students.

She was chosen from more than 200 nominations submitted by further and higher education institutions across England and Northern Ireland, and will receive an award of £10,000 to be used for her professional development in teaching and learning.

The award, which is part of The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme, aims to raise the status of learning and teaching in higher education and recognises and celebrates individuals who make an outstanding impact on the student learning experience.

The student learning experience has always been at the forefront of Penny’s approach to learning which is based on the principles of active engagement both in and out of the classroom. She utilises a range of devices to help stimulate learning such as podcasts, blogs and electronic voting systems.

Penny said: “Naturally I am delighted to receive a national teaching fellowship award in recognition of my many years work in striving to benefit the student learning environment. I am very grateful to all my colleagues at the University of Hertfordshire for all the support I have I have received in developing my approach to learning and for putting me forward as a candidate for this award.”
