Management of a community centre in Watford is set to pass into the hands of those who use it.

Centrepoint, in Raphael Drive, will become the second community-run centre in the town.

Watford Council's Cabinet previously agreed to transfer management of the Orbital Community Centre, in partnership with Watford YMCA, to its own user groups in October last year.

Transfer of Centrepoint management was agreed in principle on Monday and work will now start on the formal transfer, which is expected to take place between October and January 2009.

Mayor Thornhill said: "It's been a little bit challenging but our intention is by relinquishing the reins and allowing groups to take ownership, they would become better used.

"We want community centres to thrive but they're not. People live different lives and community centres fulfil different functions.

"Centrepoint is very quirky community centre. It's potentially quite a thriving little hub and I look forward to that. I would say get on with it, with our blessing."
