Back to School - surely one of the most dismal, soul-sapping combinations of words in the English Language? Unless, of course, you are a parent, in which case you are probably thinking about cracking open a bottle of bubbly next Wednesday and doing a can can routine around the kitchen table.

Despite appearances to the contrary, this is the height of summer. Around this time of year newspapers are usually full of photos of mud-splattered music-lovers pretending to enjoy Glastonbury as they wade, thigh-deep, through acres of hazardous slurry.

After watching a couple of recent documentaries about the tube, I must say my attitude to the men and women who work on London’s creaking Underground network has changed. Deep in the bowels of the Bakerloo, we all suffer every time the capital experiences a difficult movement, whether we are passengers or staff.

Judging by the comments on the ghost story that appeared in this newspaper a couple of week’s ago, there’s nothing like a bit of paranormal activity to send a shiver down the spine, or get people hot under the collar. Whatever you think about Darren Fernando’s claim to have seen a ghostly carriage and horses outside his house and en-route to the Royal Oak pub at Kitter’s Green, Abbots Langley, you have to admit it was a good read.
