Not on my all-time wish-list but it certainly was an experience

IT IS said there are certain things you ought to do before you get old or, to be more exact, before you depart for the Great Unknown. Of course we all have different priorities but I remember when actor Brian Blessed was a speaker at a Watford Observer Book Launch Lunch, addressing the diners about his book on his ascent of Everest.

BACK in the 1980’s, singer Bob Seger came up with a song focusing on the losing of his teenage virginity in the back of a car: “Night Moves”. There is a line in the song towards the end when he finds himself “humming a song from 1962” and remembering those Night Moves.

I tried to hint to my Dad, it doesn't pay to be too brainy

THE other week I was relating how our granddaughter in Spain is learning lessons by rote and that prompted me to reflect on my own education back in the late 1940’s and 1950’s. I remembered the endless long-division and multiplication sums my father used to set me during school holidays.

Family research and hoping for a skeleton or a significant connection

SOME years back a retired man, struggling on a pension, offered to look through my family tree in the records in London, on condition I paid his weekly rail and bus fare. I happily agreed to this deal, knowing full well the offer had been made in order for him to facilitate his own research in tandem.
