Police seize 31 vehicles on M1
POLICE seized 31 vehicles and arrested six people on the M1 yesterday, as part of a major crackdown on uninsured drivers and vehicle offences.
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) vans were deployed between junctions one and five of the motorway to identify vehicles without insurance, or whose drivers were wanted by police.
Drivers who could not prove they had insurance, or who held only provisional licenses, had their vehicles seized and taken away by transporter vehicles. They face a six point penalty on their licence, a £120 fine and the cost of recovering their vehicle. If they do not retrieve their vehicle within seven days, it will be crushed or sold.
During the operation, six people were also arrested for offences ranging from assault on police to failing to stop. Thirteen people were cautioned about defects to their vehicles and issued with an order to have them fixed.
Hertfordshire Constabulary ANPR Inspector Donna Pierce said: "This was a highly successful operation working together with our partners at the Met to catch those road users who flout the law by driving with no insurance, risking law-abiding motorists having to pay the price.
"This is not just about vehicle offences - the use of ANPR technology enables us target criminals travelling through Hertfordshire, and we will continue to work to deny criminals the use of the county's roads."
