Hospital staff who put in the extra mile for their patients have been celebrated by a monthly award.

West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust said its monthly Celebrating Excellence Staff Award was “a chance to highlight a member of our staff who does an exceptional job and goes above and beyond their everyday duties.”

Any of the 4,500 staff employed by the trust can be nominated by patients, families, visitors, members of the public and staff.

Winner of the October award was David Sear, a porter in the acute admissions unit at Watford Hospital.  Mr Sear was nominated by nine members of staff.

He said: “I am really pleased to have been nominated for this award.  I would like to thank all of the people that put me forward”.

One of Mr Sear’s nominees said: “David is a very hard working porter who will always go the extra mile for our patients and staff.  He always comes onto the shift smiling and is missed when he is not on.  He thoroughly deserves this award for his general kindness and hard work”.

Dawn Moore, ward sister at Watford Hospital’s acute admissions unit, was nominated by eleven members of staff for September’s award.

She said she was surprised but delighted, adding: “It’s lovely to be nominated by my own colleagues, I am really thrilled”.

Comments included with her nomination included “she goes the extra mile for her staff and our patients on a daily basis” and “every ward needs someone like Dawn”.

Samantha Jones, trust chief executive, said: “I would like to congratulate both Dawn and David for winning.  We are very proud of them.

“Our doctors, nurses and other staff work very hard and often in difficult circumstances.  It’s important that we recognise people who go above and beyond the call of duty.

“Every nomination is a winner in my eyes.”
