A student from Immanuel College in Bushey has received the Gold Crest Award at the Nuffield Research Placements Award Celebration of Students' Achievements.

A-level student Asher Dworkin was selected for a project at the National Institute of Medical Research in London.

These placements are offered to A-level science students in a university or research laboratory, each year by the Nuffield Bursary scheme.

The experience gives the students a real insight into state-of-the art research and how it is conducted.

This year more than 4,000 A-level students applied for the research projects and only 1,100 applicants were successful.

Of the successful applicants, 75 per cent achieved the coveted Gold Crest (Creativity in Science and Technology) after they have completed the placement. The requirements of the award include spending over 70 hours on one project, contributing something new to science and techonology and preparing the final report.

Asher, who is hoping to study science at university, was one of these students who achieved the award.

He said he found the experience extremely useful, both for developing his skills and knowledge and it will also support his university application.

Sue Muswell, Assistant Head of Sixth Form said: "Asher is the first Immanuel College student to be accepted into the Nuffield programme and we are very proud of him.

"We have a number of high calibre science A-level students in the current lower sixth who would love to be accepted next."
