Pupils from three schools in south west Hertfordshire had it all figured out when they took part in the county's first Year Five Mathematics Challenge.

A team of four from The Russell School in Chorleywood were champions in last week's final at the University of Hertfordshire. Also in the honours were Bromet Primary School, Watford, as joint runners-up, and Knutsford Primary School, Watford, who came third.

Organised by Hertfordshire County Council's Maths Advisory Team, 170 schools from all over the county took part in area heats - and the whole event was such a success it will be held again next year.

Primary Maths Adviser Fran Bradshaw said: "It's the first year that we have run the challenge and the response has been wonderful. We were staggered by the number of schools wanting to take part."

Teams of four pupils were quizzed on questions, puzzles and problem-solving, working together to find solutions.

"The final was so exciting with teachers and parents coming along to support all 18 teams.

"We wanted to raise the profile of mathematics in primary schools and give children the opportunity to pit their wits against other keen mathematicians. The Maths Challenge has promoted lots of other fun events going on in schools."

Keith Emsall, Executive Member for Education and Culture, said: "The children were buzzing about maths and everyone was impressed with how bright and enthusiastic they were. This county-wide challenge has raised the profile of maths in a fun and imaginative way, showing how much maths matters in everyday life."

Prizes were presented by Dr Keith Gould, Senior Adviser for Maths, to: winners: The Russell School, Chorleywood; joint second: Edwinstree Middle School, Buntingford, Bromet Primary, Watford, and Broxbourne C of E Primary; third: Knutsford Primary School, Watford.
