Hornets in Crisis

Former Watford chairman Jimmy Russo has contacted lawyers over Graham Taylor's 'bad man' comments

Jimmy Russo has contacted his lawyers after Watford legend Graham Taylor called the former Hornets’ chairman a “bad man” for the way he conducted himself following his resignation last week.

Russo resigned as Watford chairman prior to last Tuesday’s annual meeting (AGM) after finding out he was set to be voted off the board by fellow major shareholders Lord Michael Ashcroft and Graham Simpson.

Russo immediately demanded repayment of the £4.88m his Valley Grown Salads (VGS) company lent the club and threatened to call the administrators if he was not paid by the following Thursday afternoon.

In a TV interview, Russo claimed he had not become a “bad man” overnight and Taylor, who is currently interim chairman, responded by saying: “I saw an interview with Jimmy and he said he has not become a bad man overnight. I accept there is always more than one side to a story.

"But Jimmy, you walked into the AGM earlier this week, nobody knew what you were going to do, you resigned, you demanded immediately your £4.88m, payable within 48 hours. That’s when you did become a bad man. It was not in the interests of Watford Football Club.”

The remark resulted in Russo contacting his lawyers and on Tuesday, he said: “I am deeply disappointed by the comments that Graham made and he has also had time to retract his statement and chosen not to do so, so he left me no option but to place the matter in the hands of my lawyers.”

As the Watford Observer went to press, the Hornets’ board, which includes Taylor, were in negotiations regarding the club’s future and no one from Watford was able to comment on Russo’s decision to contact his lawyers.

Watford seemed destined for administration at the end of last week when Russo and his brother Vince rejected Lord Ashcroft’s 11th-hour offer to underwrite a £7.5m rights issue.

VGS rejected the proposal as it would have involved them investing more money just to maintain its near 30 per cent stake in the Hornets’ parent company, Watford Leisure Plc.

Russo believes Watford should be owned by one individual but the board seemed to reject his proposal to purchase the club in favour of Lord Ashcroft’s rights issue.

The former Watford chairman insists he never had a “burning desire” to own the club as he does not believe his “pockets are deep enough”, but claims he put the proposal forward in an attempt to save the club from administration.

Russo said: “I am delighted that the club has been saved. But why did it take so long for other parties to come to the table?

“The steps I have taken recently have ensured that the club’s major shareholder has now injected new funds. We knew it would be right for the club.”

Along with the £4.88m he loaned Watford, Russo has also invested £4m in shares, only to see their value diminish.

He added: “Of course I still love the club. You cannot just give something six years of your life and then hate it. You can’t.

“It was an enormous privilege to be chairman of the club and I think I did a good job. I am convinced that I could have done an even bigger and better job over a longer period of time.”

Russo has previously stated he believes members of the board knew he was going to be voted off the board at last week’s AGM but failed to inform him.

Watford’s former chairman concluded: “My conscience is crystal clear.”

Is "bad man" really such an insulting term?

I am sure people have called him worse!?

GT was just speaking with passion and through his love for the club at the time of crisis.

Sure a simply "sorry" would do and maybe time for everyone to move on?

Jimmy,

You have done a lot for WFC and bailed the club out several times and without your financial support the club would have gone into administration a long time ago. I can understand your frustration at being forced to resign, and your demands for the repayment of your loan, given that the majority shareholders firstly gave no financial support and secondly ousted you from the club.

However, to seek legal advice because GT calls you a "bad man" is a step too far. GT has always had the clubs best interests at heart and reacted because he felt that you was threatening the clubs future.

Just forget it and move on.......

This seems to be old news taken from a radio interview Russo did last Friday. I'd not be surprised if we heard no more of it as he was clearly wound up about the whole situation and was being further played by the press (he was specifically asked "Graham Taylor called you a bad man yesterday. What do you have to say about that").

Actually, if you look at the comments made by GT in the press, I can't see how there would be a cause of action for slander unless some of the facts quoted by GT are incorrect (eg if the board did know what was going to happen at the AGM).

Aside from the facts that it seems to have been a comment from Russo in the heat of the moment and there doesn't appear to be a cause of action there fore him anyway, to sue on the basis of a comment by GT would wreck his reputation with the fans even further and the damages he could get are likely to be miniscule in any event.

Like everyone else with Watford at heart, GT has always been one of the people for whom I have held the utmost respect. However if he knew about the planned coup voting J&V off the Board at the AGM, and if the plan had been to discuss a refinancing with J&V's and Fordwat's involvement beforehand, thereby trapping J&V into greater investment without a seat on the Board, that would have been a disgrace. This may have been the revenge for the EGM. Given those circumstances, for anyone to suggest that J&V were 'bad' for avoiding the trap would be wrong. Even if he didn't know beforehand, but does now, a quick. 'sorry, I realise things were more complicated than they seemed' from GT would be in order, and that should be sufficient for Jim. If I am right, for these guys to live the rest of their lives with the stigma of being labelled 'bad' by a Watford legend after the way they have been treated by our club is unfair. I am also not naive in that I suspect both parties had been trying to pick up each others share in the club cheaply. That is pretty upsetting for other smaller shareholders who would also lose heavily and have been passive onlookers to the fiasco of the last 3 years. Nevertheless whilst I am sure GT has the best interests of the club at heart I believe J&V have been stitched up here. A quick sorry from GT and an acceptance from the Russo's and perhaps we can enter the Season of Goodwill. Otherwise our club and GT will descend into yet more public humiliation. I do expect a load of abuse for saying this, but free speech and all that, it is just my point of view. There is more to this than meets the eye. The Russo's know what has gone on...twice.

Is he serious? He threatens to take the club into Administration and now wants to sue Graham Taylor.

There is still some goodwill felt towards the Russos but this would seem to be the best way of destroying it completely.

Let it go Jimmy. A lot was said in the heat of the moment.

Let's face it, it's a pathetic thing to try and sue someone over.

Sounds like a case of throwing your toys out the pram JR. You lawyers are obviously on a "no-win, no fee" payment structure as you do not have a case. GT called you bad because of your actions at the AGM and legally you cannot prove this was not "bad" so you have no case. He has not libelled you. In fact the comments on here are for more libelous so I look forward to seeing your lawyers take the WO to court as they are allowing it to be published!

The whole episode smacks that because you did not get what you want you are just trying to keep your name in the headlines. Thanks for you've done for the club, now please act with some dignity.

I think GT would be embarrassed at the ridiculously high pedestal some of you put him on. All of us have a case when someone defames you in public unless they can prove it is the truth. This case came about in the heat of the moment and a simple sorry would not do any harm to GT's reputation and may save Watford money if they decide to stump up for his legal fees. In my opinion JR did his best for the club but lost a power struggle, simple as that so proving GT's comments were the truth is not straightforward.

ok, this seems a bit far fetched to sue someone over something that was said when tensions were high. But lets not forget what Jimmy has done for our club. He and his brother have saved us more than once, and for some reason their faces do not fit in the boardroom. I think he did a great job as chairman, during the last year, and he took over the club in a right mess. He got a lot of money in, even 500k for that unemployed t**t! I think he has been more honest and upfront than Ashcroft and Simpson have been. If GT moves on from his interim chairmanship then its probably back to being kept in the dark and creative finances going through the club again. GT is obviously a legend and can do no wrong, but i still think the Russos would have been good for our club - even though they are Chelsea fans!

Everyone has there opinion that is fair ,to have a go at Jimmy i think is shortsighted ,GT chose his side, some fans went with trusting GT and may be right in the long term ,But for all those that believe GT can do no wrong let me remind you he RETIRED from football management after leaving Watford mid season telling us fans he had had enough even though we wanted him to stay ,only he then by magic appear's as Aston Villa's new manager for the second time a few weeks later ! ,He was branded as an unkind vegetable by the Sun Newspaper and told us all how hurt he was as we fans were for him I vowed i would never read that paper again in support of him , GT then wrote for that same paper taking i am sure a handsome reward for doing so ,so let's just judge things as they move forward,
DURING THE TIME THE RUSSO'S HAVE BEEN ON THE BOARD BOTH FIRST TIME AND SECOND THE FOOTBALL TEAM HAS FLOURISHED THEY NEVER MISSED A GAME HOME OR AWAY IN THAT TIME EITHER ,instead of having a go at the Russo's how about we now also MOVE ON and start asking for some real clarity on what our "saviour's" Ashcroft ,Taylor Winter ,Timperley e.t.c are going to do to move the club forward ,all of these saviour's have been very quiet for sometime now while the Russo's tried to stabilise our club, are we now going to see investestment in the team ,ground e.t.c ,are we keeping our loan players ,is GT going to be perm Chairman now ,will we see a new East stand ?

FANS FORUM i belieive called for with attendance from Our Chairman ,ceo and majority shareholders ,will not hold my breath though ,for all of you that think the worst is behind us and the spin will not return i really hope you are right ?
I have been season ticket holder and regular away supporter for over 30 years now and am far from convinced we are on the right road now !.

Agree with most of the comment here, heat of the moment stuff from GT when something he holds very dear was threatened. I think GT had every right to say what he said, and Jimmy knows he played a power game and lost. He needs to get over the "personal stuff" said in the heat of the moment.

Having said that, maybe Russos tactics haven't endeared them to people around the club at the highest level.

Having heard some interesting snippets this last week, it does seem Russos tried to pick the club up on the cheap and did so by applying "heavy handed" tactics to gain their place after the last AGM.

As much as it pains me to say this, some of V.O.R's points (although very badly made) may well hold some water. It looks like Simpson was just plain "suckered" by the Boy Blunder. I don't think the much touted dirt on Simpson exists, he was just stupid.

I have heard (and this is only rumour) that the Good Lord felt he didn't want to negotiate with people employing such tactics which is why he played in the game he did to gain control and oust the Russos, which in effect he has.

Remember it was Winter (Ashcroft's boy) who put the current Board in place, brought GT and Timperley back. Wouldn't surprise me to see Winter installed as chairman again by Lord A!

Come what may, the whole thing is one unholy mess and it's very annoying that these people have felt the need to play these power politics with out club! And...as has been said none of us fans now know what on earth is going on!

I just hope Lord A has the best interests of the club at heart, but I find it difficult to believe he will have - I hope I am wrong.

I also hope we will be given at least some comfort that our club is now safe on or before Boxing day.

Happy Christmas everyone!

I have been a supporter of the Russo's and even understood that what went on last week was not about money but about them being stabbed in the back by Lord A and Simpson after they had not lifted a finger to help the club the previous year. However just as Jimmy was angry with those 2 he should appreciate why GT in turn was angry with him, along with a lot of fans. If he does take action against GT then I have to agree that it is petty, just move on Jimmy. If you do take action whatever the outcome even your most ardent supporter will lose respect for you

BigDaveH says...

GT has done amazing things for this club, in that I have the utmost respect. However even he makes mistakes. He fell out with Elton in 2000 after we were relegated from the Prem, plus didn't exactly endear himself to the country during his England reign, so nobody perfect.

Both GT & Jimmy are successful people in there fields of work, with that comes an ego (as it does to any success), all it needs is for GT to publicly acknowledge the GOOD work of Jimmy and that he is not a bad man, then all this will be forgotten !!

Jimmy's issue is that WINTER was colluding with WILSON (Ashcroft's advisor) to vote Jimmy & Vince off for past few weeks, the slippery eel. Did & Does GT know that !?!?

Was GT a party to that or did he know nothing (my gut says he didn't know) .....

GT, don't TRUST WINTER OR WILSON !!! They will get you down to their level !!!

I have a funny feeling the club will go tits up next year, then GT will realise and he will get Jimmy back & Elton back .....

For me the first post by WFC4ever was spot on.

Put simply GT almost certainly didnt fully understand the position JR was put in nor the financial implications and a simple apology made after the event would have done.

The fact that either an apology hasnt been made or maybe not accepted is concerning and if it hasnt been made I would suggest Gt has the same PR representation as Tiger Woods.

Hey Jimmy, at the point when GT made the remark, your action had potentially plunged the club into administration, I fully accept your motive and reasons for doing this, however I would have strung the foulest, most rudest sentence of words together that you have probably ever heard or likely to had administration occured, so bad man is a bit tame.....and if you have money to waste on solicitors why not pay for HH wages for the rest of the season !!!!, but don't mess with god..rightly or wrongly nearly all Watford fans would be united with GT and your recent good work would pale into insignificance. Glasgow Hornet says...
3:55pm Wed 23 Dec 09

Fact 1: Russos loaned money (£4.88m) was GUARANTEED - it was HIM who secured it against OUR stadium.
Fact 2: The majority shareholders were in a position to out-vote whatever his proposals were and publicly offered a £7.5m rights issue.
Fact 3: That this would dilute his shareholding or cost him more to buy more shares is true, but it is also a red herring when it comes to the administration question.
Fact 4: RUSSO demanded administration or his money back IMMEDIATELY even though he was GUARANTEED that money by the end of January - ie, HE put OUR club in jeopardy for the sake of a few weeks.
Does THAT make him a 'bad man' - well he said it first. In terms of Watford Football Club and all the supporters - his ACTIONS were BAD. He could have waited for his money, but threatened us (and other often small local businesses) with insolvency. That would have been BAD.
GT supported the only solution to our problems. How good will that solution turn out to be? Time will tell, but at least we have that time now - no thanks to Russo.
