Police station evacuated

Watford Police Station has been evacuated after a member of the public handed a "grenade" into the enquiry desk.

The building, in Shady Lane, has been completely evacuated and the bomb squad is on route after the item, described as a "smoke cannister" was brought into the station at 11.32am.

A cordon has also been put in place around the building, which is adjacent to Watford Magistrates Court.

It is not known how long the cordon will be in place.

A police representative said: "Someone brought it some sort of old grenade. It's something that's been found and as a precaution we've had to evacuate the building.

"This sort of thing happens all the time."

It's over. Finished about 12.50pm.

Didn't evacuate all the buildings down Clarendon road so obv not that serious, just buggered up the traffic for a while.

Good on them though to sort it quickly.

well done. :)

Seems like a bit of overkill here.Ok,stop the traffic(smoke can cause a crash)but what danger was ANYBODY in from a smoke cannister?

barbelybob - they weren't certain that it was only a smoke canister to start weren they?

Rather be evacuated than have my head blown off because it was ONLY a smoke cannister and they didn't think it worth getting everyone out the way. :|

Well whatever it was,it had survived being taken to the police station,im sure if left alone,it would have been fine.I might add that if it WAS a hand grenade, putting it in a cupboard and closing the door would have done a good job of protecting the country. The point im making is how quick this country is to put the most negative light on ANYTHING and EVERYTHING.We are governed by doom and gloom merchants whose glass is always half empty and with comments like yours im not surprised"get my head blown off" how thourghly dramatic. You forgot about the earthquake it would cause and the hoards of perverts it would unleash on the world.Grow up.

to be fair, barbelybob, if they hadn't put such a negative light on this situation and the grenade had gone off and it WAS serious, you'd be on here complaining that they didn't take more precautions, or that they didn't do enough to make everyone safe. So it's either the law puts a negative light on things like this and protect civillians, even if it isnt as serious as first thought, or they think 'oh it's nothing serious' and suddenly watford will look like buncefield

I'd rather be safe than sorry, to be honest.

How many grenades have gone off accidentally say in the last 50 years? let me guess....NONE.So why would it go off. What im saying is why close Clarendon Road? Why all the police,it wasnt a terrorist attack, shut shady lane off and the police station, problem solved, drama over.I have a suspision this was all show and bluff just to say look at us,were on top of all this.Let s get one thing straight...Buncefiel
d was not a hand grenade it was the largest explosion in britain for 50 years and your comparisons are laughable. You can buy fireworks with more explosive than a hand grenade but we dont shut the town down every Nov 5th....

as i said, it doesn't matter if it hadn't gone off, they were taking precautions. and as i also said, if they hadnt and something DID happen, unlikely as that was, you'd probably be the first to complain that they didn't do enough to make sure the area was safe.

so what if there have been no grenades accidently going off in the past? there's a first for everything. im glad they dealt with it how they did, it proves that they actually look out for the public. i'd hate to see what it would be like if people like you were in charge.

barleybob, you're very negative. You are the one complaining. Madzz66 and I are actually congratulating the police force on a good job. So what they closed Clarendon road? There are other routes into the town centre and to the station and it was closed for less than an hour.

Wish someone would chuck a hand grenade at you and shut you up.

Nice to see a grown up debate as usual.

BarbelyBob, don't let yourself down with posting comments like that - it does make you look somewhat immature I am afraid.
