Hairdressing students cut from college course

Disappointed would-be students were turned away from a college course after hundreds flocked to the enrolment day.

West Herts College is sending out a warning to people who want to enrol on its popular hair and beauty course next year, after places were filled in minutes for this year’s intake.

Kelly Small, of High Street, Abbots Langley, had waited for her children to get to school age before thinking about a future career as a hairdresser.

She visited West Herts College a few months ago to enquire about the process, and was given a brochure which explained that the doors to the college would open at 10am on enrolment day.

The 26-year-old mother-of-two, said: “I arrived at 9.30am to join the queue and then one of the co-ordinators came over and said the places were all filled.

“I could not believe it, apparently they opened the doors at 9.15am, I was so disappointed, but will try again next year. It will not deter me.”

Negin Parvizi, representative for the college, said: “The hair and beauty department at West Herts College is an Ofsted Grade 1 outstanding school and as a result our courses are extremely popular and fill up very quickly.

“To ensure we have a fair enrolment policy we enrol for our part-time courses on a first come, first served basis.”

Head of school of hair and beauty at the college, Sandra Thornley, said: “Within half an hour of opening our doors our courses were full, we had people who had queued from 7am to make sure they got on their course.

“We are holding waiting lists and we are doing everything we can to accommodate everyone who wants to study with us.”
